Now as a parent you know that there really is NO MONSTER… there is just your child with a very vivid imagination.
So what do you do? Do you say to them…
“There is NO MONSTER your just imagining it BUT let me show you how to take THE MONSTER OUT in case it hurts you?”
NO of course not.
If you start showing your child how to get rid of ‘the monster’ so that it doesn’t cause them harm then you are simply reinforcing the notion that this ‘monster’ is somehow real or poses a threat to them.
Many NLP’ers and Hypnotherapists (metaphorically speaking) end up doing this exact thing?
A client comes in and says, “How do I get rid of these phobic thoughts? These depressive issues? This catastrophizing?”
And now the hypnotherapist might show them how to “think positive” or “place these “BAD THOUGHTS” into a balloon and have them float away.”
Or the NLP practitioner might show people how to make their thoughts, “black and white… smaller… move them off into the distance…”
BUT do you have to say to your 5 year old who’s scared of the monster… “there is no monster… but let me show you how to make it black and white and send it off into a balloon so it can’t hurt you.” OF COURSE NOT!
